Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which martial art should I try?
A: We let you try many styles! Leadership Martial Arts teaches a mix of Brazilian JiuJitsu, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Kickboxing & Jeet Kune Do. Remember, the attitude of the instructor(s) and the atmosphere of the class are just as important as the style itself.

Q: Why Leadership Martial Arts?
A: We are the premier academy for Martial Arts and leadership development. Our highly skilled instructors along with the lead designer from IBM's Leadership Development Team and the First Assembly facilitators have teamed up to create a martial arts and leadership development program that is by far the best in its class for children, teens and adults.

Q: Are there any age limits?
A: Anyone over the age of 4 is welcome to join. We have several programs suitable for each age and skill level. There is no upper age limit. As many senior citizen black belts have shown, it is never too late to start.

Q: Will I learn practical self defense?
A: YES! Practical self defense is an important facet of the art. All self-defense techniques you or your children learn are age specific. Younger kids will learn about avoiding strangers and managing conflict with bullies. The adult self-defense program, however, is based on preservation of safety.

Q: Do I have to be an athlete to train?
A: No. Everyone trains at his or her own level. If you are not used to hard physical training, that's fine. You will find that your strength, endurance, and flexibility increase steadily as you work out. If you are a conditioned athlete, don't worry, you will get a good workout. We welcome students of all backgrounds and abilities. People who are physically challenged are encouraged to join. Leadership Martial Arts can be rewarding for anyone who wants to train.

Q: Do I need any experience?
A: No previous experience in the martial arts is required. All you need is the desire to learn. We also welcome students of other martial arts who want to learn.

Q: What is a typical class like?
A: Each class begins with a light warm-up and stretching designed to prevent muscle sprains or other injuries. The lessons of individual classes vary to keep things fun and interesting, but often include choreographed sequences of movements, punching, kicking, self-defense, throwing and grappling drills. Sparring with protective pads is practiced regularly, with emphasis on light, safe contact using technique rather than strength. In classes with younger martial artists we often incorporate a game into the end of each class for physical development and fun!

Q: Will my child be learning to fight?
A: No, but they will learn to defend themselves. While you can't avoid the word martial—they are fighting systems—keep in mind that what we teach today are methods of self-defense and, ultimately, emphasizing avoiding conflict through self-control, self-discipline and improving self-confidence.

Q: What do I call the teachers?
A: Adult Black Belts are referred to as "Sir" or “Ma’am” or "Sensei" if they are on the instructor team. Part of our philosophy at Leadership Martial Arts is to encourage the concept of "respect for others." To encourage this concept, we acknowledge any Black Belt or instructor by these titles to show respect for their experience and the amount of time they have devoted to the Art. Adult students who acknowledge these titles also serve as a good example to the children in terms of teaching the concept of "respect.” Children will follow your example and hopefully transfer this respect to their own parents, school teachers and to other adults in general.
